Should you have a STI Screen?

The Practice offers a comprehensive Sexual Health Service.  This includes screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections and treatment of some infections.  Testing is done with a urine test or a self-taken vaginal swab test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea infection, and a blood test for HIV and Syphillis infection.  These tests can be done on the day of your appointment in the practice.

The UK continues to see a rise in the incidence of Sexually Transmitted Infections including chlamydia, genital warts, genital herpes and gonorrhoea.  HIV infection is also increasing and is often diagnosed late in the UK.  HIV infection can now be treated with antibiotics and antiviral medication allowing patients with HIV to lead normal lives with normal life expectancy.  However early diagnosis is essential.

We therefore encourage patients to avail of the opportunity for screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections at the practice.

What to do if you have symptoms of a STI or you are worried that you could have a STI?

We run an appointment based session where patients can see our Practice Nurse Susan who has had special training and experience in Sexual Health and Contraception and can assess your risk and symptoms and arrange immediate testing and treatment if appropriate.

Simply make an appointment in our ‘48hr clinic’ or ask our receptionists for an appointment with a Sexual Health Practitioner.  Appointments: 01229 822 332.
